Here at As Seen on TV Review Source we are proud to bring you a review you can always trust. Brian Lemis, Product Analyst
Is the LifeProof iPhone case the best option for drop-, shock-, dirt- and waterproofing your best friend?
You’ll know if you’ve got kids or are just a bit clumsy that a cracked iPhone screen is one of life’s annoyances. And young children today seem to be increasingly creative in where they store your iPhone for you: in the fridge, in the back yard, in a wet bucket…If you’re reading this then you’re obviously on the market for a case that you can trust to protect your iPhone from accidents, or perhaps you’re a budding underwater photographer? Whatever your needs, I’ve reviewed the market to bring you a review of the LifeProof iPhone case, and why I think it’s the best iPhone protector on the market.
What’s different about the LifeProof?
There are quite a few iPhone covers on the market, but they are not all designed with the same protection in mind. I did my research before recommending the LifeProof cover, but if you were considering shopping around, I’d recommend you ask the following questions:
- Does it allow you to access all your regular iPhone functions?
- Does it offer maximum protection without bulk?
- Is it completely waterproof, or just water-resistant?
- Is it built to the highest specifications?
- Does it maintain its look and efficacy over time?

But first of all, you may want to ask yourself a bit about LifeProof, the company. Who are they, and can they be trusted?
About the company
LifeProof has won numerous awards, such as MensJournal.com ‘Gear of the Year’, About.Com ‘Readers Choice 2012’, Gear Junkie’s ‘Top Ten Gear Picks’ and Field Stream’s ‘Best of the Best 2013’. Users rate it 4.5 out of 5 (in 63 reviews) and it has 166,000 likes on Facebook and around 20,000 Twitter followers. The company is young, dynamic and importantly transparent with its customers. For me, this combination is a winner.
All your functions at your fingertips
Ask any iPhone owner what their major gripe is about any regular case and I’m sure they’ll rant on about loss of sensitivity, bulk and reduced functionality. The LifeProof case has been designed to be as thin as possible (just 1.5mm), and boasts double AR-coated optical glass lenses for optimum photo and video quality, the full range of phone features when using the case, and an improvement in sound due to the design which uses the back of the case as a sub-woofer.
Anyone could shock- and water-proof their iPhone given the right amount of materials; as one BestBuy employee succinctly wrote on one review: “12 year olds with bubble wrap and duct tape could make a phone case like the Otterbox”. The smart engineering at LifeProof means that shocks are distributed from the edges to the thin casing on the back, reducing the amount of bulk required but still offering major protection. And it weighs in at under 28g.
Much of the chat on forums is regarding the waterproof functionality of LifeProof, and there are hundreds of videos on YouTube as well as from the manufacturer on the LifeProof seals and how they let you use your phone in up to 6.6 feet of water. This means it’s waterproof, not just water-resistant, which is a big difference if you’re using it in the pool or snow. I would just urge readers to understand that the iPhone was not designed to be an underwater camera, so if you’ve dreams of being an underwater photography, probably best to invest in a fit-for-purpose camera. That said, the LifeProof version is great for occasional use underwater of less than an hour each time, and you can also buy its ‘Total Water Protection Program’ for just ten bucks – register and if your phone suffers water damage whilst in the case, LifeProof will fix or replace your iPhone.
Military grade technology
You’ll stick with the LifeProof because of its high shock and impact protection that doesn’t waver, designed to military IP-68 specifications to protect from dirt, dust and water and MIL-STD-810F-516.5 standard drop protection (up to 6.6 ft). Furthermore the case can withstand temperatures of -40°C to 60°C (-40F° to 140°F).
A good looking piece of kit
While other brands that I reviewed were critiqued for losing their looks and effectiveness over time, LifeProof was one that stood out as a long-term partner for you and your iPhone. And not that you’ll be swayed by looks alone, but the LifeProof range are seriously sexy; opt for regular colors, knock out colors or muted earthy tones.
What people are saying about LifeProof iPhone cases?
Overall the feedback about LifeProof is positive, but there are some negative reviews out there about the effectiveness of the casing underwater. The company has countered this with its Total Protection plan, but after repeated testing of the case myself, I have to ask whether those complaining checked thoroughly how to use the casing. For me, the proof of success is in the amount of commendations from worthy sources like tech magazines and journalists, rather than those that seem to love complaining on Amazon and the like!
- “I recommend LifeProof without hesitation.”
- “For hard conditions in snow, rain and mud it is top product.”
- “To all tech owners out there, take my advice. Expensive gadgets require topline protection, Lifeproof answers the call.”
- “The LifeProof case, although initially expensive, is a worthy investment.”
- “I have had many cases including several otterbox models and this is the best one I have had.”
- “Accessing the headphones jack is inconvenient but I’d still rate it 4 out of 5, it’s a very nice case offering a high level of protection.”
- “The touch screen works [underwater], but the focusing part will not work as well as will outside of the water.”
There have been a few, mostly about older versions, companies selling fakes (always buy direct from the manufacturer or from trusted stores) or water damage. As I mentioned, Apple says that their iPhones should not be used underwater, so a little common sense is required. If you are going to take photos underwater, you might be better investing in a camera designed for the purpose. But for accidental dropping into water, or taking photos in hot tubs and so on, LifeProof is your best bet.
Where to buy LifeProof
Please take precautions when buying through third parties; always check authenticity. You can buy the LifeProof iPhone cover direct from the manufacturer’s website for around $80, with an optional $10 for Total Water Protection cover.
